Aluminum electrolytic capacitors use an electrolyte and two aluminum foils to form a device that stores electrical energy. The device consists of two metalized foils, called anode and cathode, which are separated by a thin insulating material, called the separator. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, a voltage is also applied to the electrolyte. This creates a strong electric field which causes electrons to move inside the capacitor. The electrons form a current which is then passed through the electrolyte, across the anode and cathode foil. This current is what creates the electric field and causes the capacitor to store electrical energy.

UVY1A331MED is a large surface-mount aluminum electrolytic capacitor offering excellent capacitance and a long life and is used in a variety of applications including motor capacitors, relay applications and power supply filters. The rated voltage is 6.3V and the rated dc capacitance is 4700µF. This capacitor offers a long life (100,000 hours) and very low effective series resistance (ESR) of 0.045ohm. The breakdown voltage is 18.8V at 25 °C.
