The V120ZC1P is a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) device, and more specifically, a metal-oxide varistor (MOV), that provides extreme voltage protection in consumer electronics, automotive and other industrial control equipment. It is available in a variety of package styles, so it can be easily integrated into existing designs or used in new designs.
This device is designed to handle high voltage transients caused by external sources such as lightning and other power surges. It also provides protection from ESD (electrostatic discharge), which is a frequent source of short-term voltage spikes in consumer electronics and automotive electronics. The V120ZC1P is designed to clamp the overvoltage, absorbing the energy that would otherwise cause significant damage to the circuit.
The V120ZC1P is made up of a ceramic core surrounded by metal layers, such as zinc oxide, lead oxide, aluminum and copper. These materials are chosen for their ability to provide the desired electrical characteristics, such as resistance, capacitance and inductance. The ceramic core and layers of metal form a protective “bubble” around the MOV, enabling it to withstand up to 200V of surge voltage without failing. In the event of a large surge, the device can absorb up to 100J of energy without damaging itself or the equipment that it is protecting.
When an overvoltage event occurs, the device first reduces the voltage gradually and uniformly, using a high degree of attenuation. This rapid rise to peak voltage is then followed by an equally rapid decline in voltage. This declining voltage is then further reduced through a combination of capacitive and inductive properties. As the voltage is further lowered, the capacitive energy stored in the MOV is gradually discharged.
Finally, energy is dissipated in the form of heat, allowing the MOV to cool down. This process is known as self-heating and is essential for the successful operation of the MOV. The process, as a whole, is known as the clamping effect. This is because the MOV effectively “clamps” the voltage level, absorbing energy and dissipating it in the form of heat.
