TVS - Varistors, MOVs Application Field and Working Principle
TVS (transient voltage suppressors) is a comprehensive protection product, including varistors, MOVs and other components. V120ZT4P belongs to the category of TVS series, which is mainly used for the prevention of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and strong surge, lightning or other transient current threats.
The working principle of V120ZT4P is based on the characteristics of the transition metal oxide. When an overvoltage occurs, the V120ZT4P device’s voltage-dependent zinc oxide varistor will rapidly switch on, diverting excess current away from the protected circuit. And when the overvoltage subsides, the device returns to its original low-resistance state. At this time, it can function as a voltage-limiting device, providing a low “clamping voltage” for the protected circuit.
Varistor is a kind of voltage-dependent resistor, which is mainly composed of sintered metal oxide such as ZnO (zinc oxide) and MnO2 (manganese dioxide). Varistors have a large inherent resistance value. When the voltage increases to a value that exceeds its rated voltage, the resistance value drops sharply and a large amount of current is diverted, providing an effective shutdown. Therefore, the varistor can limit the voltage and prevent the overvoltage from continuing to transmit to allow the other components to operate at the desired voltage.
MOVs (metal oxide varistors) are overvoltage protection devices used to absorb large currents when a system is subjected to overvolts. When its rated voltage is exceeded, MOVs can limit the voltage to an acceptable level by providing a very low resistance path. Thus, MOVs can provide a safe and secure overvoltage protection.
The application fields of V120ZT4P are mainly used for communication systems, power supplies, home appliances, automotive fields, industrial control and medical equipment. It can perform line lightning protection, static discharge protection, overvoltage protection, over-current protection, over-temperature protection and other functions.
V120ZT4P is a 10x10mm surface mount electrical component which comes in a TO-72 package with an integrated suppressor diode for ESD protection.
