Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), are nonlinear two-terminal components with a nonlinear nonlinearity that vary in resistance with the applied voltage. Varistors have a great ability to resist electrical transients and surges up to a certain peak voltage and thus are widely used in many industrial applications, such as telecommunications, medical, consumer electronics, automotive, and military applications. The V130LC2P is a metal oxide varistor (MOV) manufactured by Vishay Semiconductors, which provides superior surge protection in a compact SMT package. The V130LC2P is a radial leaded, low profile disc-shaped thermoplastic epoxy encapsulated varistor with a LCP (low capacitance) coating on the top of the disc. It is designed to withstand surges up to 30 V, with a rated current of 13 A. It features a small case size of 1.6 mm, high mechanical stability, low capacitance, and high surge current capability. It is ideal for use in ESD protection, overvoltage protection, lightening strike protection, and general overvoltage applications. The working principle of a varistor is based on the resistance-voltage characteristics, i.e., how the resistance changes with the applied voltage. The resistance of a varistor is relatively low and increases exponentially with increasing voltage. This behavior is known as "clamping" and is responsible for the protection provided by the varistor against electrical transients and surges. The leakage current of the V130LC2P is very low, making it suitable for use in sensitive electrical circuits. Since it has a low capacitance, it does not interfere with the high-frequency components of the signal. The device has an operating temperature range from -40 °C to 85 °C, making it suitable for use in a wide range of environmental conditions.
