The V130SM7 is a series of varistors offered by Littelfuse Inc. Varistors are voltage-dependent resistors that are constructed from a ceramic material that contains both a metal oxide and a semiconductor material. When a voltage is applied, the semiconductor material creates a rectifying junction and acts as a voltage regulator. The metal oxide creates a breakdown field which causes the varistor to reduce its resistance in the presence of high voltage. This makes it highly effective at absorbing voltage spikes.
These devices are available in two formats: Standard and Hybrid. In the Standard format, V130SM7 devices are rated at 7.25 VAC, 8 VDC, and 13 VAC. In Hybrid devices, they have additional protection features, such as a higher surge current rating and improved thermal dissipation. In both cases, the devices are RoHS compliant and UL recognized.
The V130SM7 is particularly suited for applications that require both high voltage handling capabilities and fast response times. These include the protection of sensitive electronics from voltage spikes, overvoltage/undervoltage protection, or in noise filtering. In the most common application, the V130SM7 is part of a transient voltage suppression (TVS) circuit that can reduce or absorb a surge of high-voltage transients.
The working principle of the V130SM7 is simple. When an overvoltage is applied or a voltage spike occurs, the metal oxide and semiconductor ceramic materials generate a rectifying junction which rapidly reduces the voltage. This reduces the amount of energy that is passed through the varistor, and the device dissipates it as heat instead. When the overvoltage is removed, the junction recovers almost instantaneously, and the varistor returns to its rated value. This allows the V130SM7 to provide fast and highly effective surge protection.
