The V130LS10CP is a Varistor, or Voltage Dependent Resistor, from Littelfuse. It operates like a regular resistor, except that its resistance decreases as the voltage across it exceeds its nominal triggering voltage. The V130LS10CP is designed for lightning and surge protection of electronic circuits, as well as for voltage clamping and over-pressure disconnection of SMPS, Telecom appliances, and PC board level applications.
Having a mobile junction, this device features a very fast response time. The voltage dependent resistor has low and consistent capacitance with no hysteresis, and is field-installable for use in a variety of situations. Moreover, it has a wide operating temperature range and features two levels of protection. With a ratings current of 5uA and resistive load of 1kOhms, the V130LS10CP is well suited for applications where limiting the inrush current is important.
The Varistor also features a molded package for maximum ruggedness during handling. Additionally, the V130LS10CP has very low inductance making it ideal for protection against high frequency electrical discharges. Its low power consumption provides a long product life, ensuring reliable operation even in extreme temperatures and during extended periods of time.
Working Principle
Varistors are basically a non-linear resistor, operating on the principle of maximum power transfer. When the voltage exceeds its threshold, the varistor decreases its resistance allowing more current to flow. This current is limited by the value of power dissipation, which in turn prevents voltage from rising. When the voltage excursion overshoots the breakdown voltage, the resistance of the Varistor grows infinitely, return a high impedance path to the breakdown point.
To function properly, a Varistor must be connected in series with a circuit for which it should provide protection. When an AC surge with a high voltage and small timespan occurs, the resistor will conduct and dissipate the excess energy. It is critical for the design engineer to choose the right resistor for the application, in order to avoid overloads and voltage spikes.
