The V175LA10CP is designed to make use of what is known as a Zener diode element. This element works in a manner where the breakdown voltage is determined by the depletion region of the device, created by the doping of materials used in the construction of the element. When the diode is exposed to a voltage above its breakdown voltage, it enters what is referred to as the Zener effect state, in which the diode is forward biased by that voltage. Inside the element there is a voltage drop, which is the actual value of the breakdown voltage for the device. Also, since this diode exhibits non-linear characteristics at these voltages, it can be used as an ideal voltage regulator. This makes it an effective device for suppressing ESD pulses, as these pulses usually range in the breakdown voltage of the device.
