The V175LS5, a component in the TVS (transient voltage suppressor) series of components, belongs to a subset of varistors - MOVs (metal oxide varistors). MOVs are a form of static electricity protection, also known as surge limiting diodes. MOVs are made using zinc oxide grains suspended in a polyester film. When a large enough transient voltage appears across the MOV, the grains break down and provide a low impedance path to ground. As such, MOVs are not operated as continuous “on/off” devices but instead function as slow “on/off” devices.
The V175LS5, in particular, is a metal-oxide varistor designed for 125V AC or 180V DC transient surge protection. It is offer in an encapsulated radial lead package that offers high ESP parameters of the protection circuits and superior thermal characteristics. It has superior surge protection capability, with a maximum peak pulse current of 10000A (10kA).
The working principle of the V175LS5 is based on the fact that, when voltage exceeds its breakdown voltage, carrier injection occurs in the device leading to conduction and thus clamping of the overvoltage. The device is basically comprised of a zinc oxide varistor element suspended in an inert dielectric polyester film. The zinc oxide grains suspended in the dielectric film are basically semiconductor particles. As voltage rises, the particles align themselves near the anode end thus inducing carriers and ultimately leading to conduction. This process of avalanche breakdown induces conduction when the voltage across the varistor exceeds its avalanche breakdown voltage.
In addition, the V175LS5 is constructed in such a way that it offers protection against voltage fluctuations. It has a capacity to handle high energy pulses and surges of up to 4000A and 10kA, due to its highly efficient capacitance characteristics. These characteristics allow the V175LS5 to dissipate the electric energy, thus protecting the system from any possible transient events. Also, the device has a low clamping voltage of less than 325V. This prevents high stress when compared to other devices having higher clamping voltage.
The V175LS5 is capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -55C to 125C, making it suitable for operation in a wide range of environments. It is very durable and capable of performing for more than 10,000 hours without any considerable degradation. Moreover, it has a low leakage current in the order of micro-amps.
