A V200CH8 is a type of Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) and Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) device. It has a wide variety of applications including overvoltage protection, transient voltage protection, and inductive load switching. The device is designed to absorb transient voltages, typically less than 200 volts, and, depending on the design, can either switch the current or just clamp the voltage.
A V200CH8 device consists of a tin oxide element, typically encased within a ceramic material, and surrounded by two electrodes. This “sandwich” is then enclosed within a plastic or metal package with lead-wire connections. The intrinsic distance between the electrodes determines the threshold voltage of the MOV device, in turn determines the maximum voltage that can be applied before conduction occurs.

Another application for a V200CH8 device is overvoltage protection. When an overvoltage condition is present, the varistor will allow a predetermined maximum flow of current, thus limiting the circuit output voltage. The MOV device is also well suited to provide current limiting during high inrush conditions for high value inductive loads. The device is programmed to switch into a higher conductive state, thus allowing limited current to be drawn from the circuit.
