A Varistor, also known as a Variable Resistor, is an electrical component which is used to prevent high voltage or current from overloading a single circuit. Varistors are commonly present in many electrical systems, including televisions, computers, audio systems and other electronics, to protect the device from zap damage caused by power surges, spikes, and sudden increases in current. The Varistor is a voltage dependent resistor which has two terminals connected to it and a metal oxide material which acts as its primary component. The most common type of Varistor is the V250LA10CP, which is often used in applications where transient voltage is high, including Discharge Light Batons, Inverters, UPS, and CD/DVD Players.
The V250LA10CP Varistor is a surface mount varistor that is made of a suitable material (metal oxide) that effectively limits transient voltage. It is designed to open when the applied voltage between its two terminals reaches a certain level, thus limiting its output and averting potential damage. Its working principle is based on the nonlinear resistance of the metal oxide material, which changes depending on the applied voltage.
