Varistors, also known as voltage dependent resistors (VDRs), are a type of resistor whose resistance changes with the voltage applied to them. They are useful as surge suppressors, providing protection from electrical transients, such as lightning strikes, short circuits, and power surges. MOVs, or Metal Oxide Varistors, are the most popular type of varistors, combining both a low-resistance “on” state and a high-resistance “off” state.

V300LC40APX2855 application field and working principle

The V300LC40APX2855 is a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) with an operating voltage range of 28V to 55V and an operating current of 30A. It is specifically designed for robust protection against transient surges while also providing ESD protection in automotive, railway, and industrial applications. The V300LC40APX2855 is capable of withstanding multiple high voltage and high energy surges, and can dissipate up to 3 Joules at its rated current.

The devices are constructed from ceramic body and an internal metal oxide layer, which consists of various grain compounds. This internal layer is preconditioned so that it can form a second solution as the applied voltage increases, thus providing a lower, “resistive” resistance to the external circuit. When voltage on the device is below the clamping voltage, the device behaves like an open circuit. But, when the voltage on the device reaches its rated clamping voltage, the device "clamps" and its impedance drop significantly, providing an alternate low resistance path for the transients.
