The V420LA20A varistor is an AC and DC voltage sensitive metal oxide resistor which is used to protect circuit equipment from over-voltage events. The V420LA20A is designed for across-the-line application with both AC and DC voltage. The varistor has an adjustable Clamping Voltage and a temperature coefficient that ensures its performance. The V420LA20A varistor is offered with two product families, which are low power and high power. The low power V420LA20A varistor is used for applications requiring up to 20 Watts of power handling capability, while the high power V420LA20A is used for applications rated up to 40 Watts.
The working principle of the V420LA20A varistor is based on a zinc oxide layer that is sandwiched between two electrodes. The zinc oxide layer is made with nanometer-thick strands of zinc oxide which increases its surface area and improves its electrical and dielectric properties. When exposed to a voltage, the electrons within the zinc oxide layer move and create a current flow, which generates a magnetic field. The magnetic field generated increases proportionally with the voltage, allowing the varistor to react faster to sudden voltage changes. When the voltage exceeds the pre-set threshold level, the device quickly responds by clamping the voltage to the varistor’s breakdown voltage.
