DC DC Converters
A DC-DC converter is an electronic device used to convert one direct current (DC) signal to another DC signal. It is used to convert DC voltage and current to different levels in order to drive a variety of loads. The most common type of DC-DC converter is the Switch Mode Transformer (SMT) that uses a metal oxide semiconductor (MOSFET) switch to disconnect the input from the output and maintain regulation.

The VBT1-S12-S3.3-SMT-TR is a switching DC-DC converter that can take a wide input voltage range of 7 – 18 volts and output a stable 3.3 volts at up to 1.5A of current. The converter also has a wide temperature range operating from – 40°C to +85°C. The VBT1-S12-S3.3-SMT-TR has an efficient and low-noise design that includes a shielded EMI/RFI noise filter and low output ripple.
The VBT1-S12-S3.3-SMT-TR DC-DC converter contains a non-isolated synchronous buck circuit and a metal oxide semiconductor (MOSFET) switch connected in parallel. The input voltage is first applied to a voltage divider that produces a voltage equal to the output voltage of the converter. This voltage is used to control the MOSFET switch which is either opened or closed depending on the input voltage. When the MOSFET is opened, the input voltage is disconnected from the converter and the output voltage is maintained at a constant level.
When the MOSFET switch is closed, the current flow from the input to the output cause a magnetic field to be generated in the transformer primary winding. This magnetic field is then link the secondary winding of the transformer, generating a voltage transformation ratio that is applied to the output voltage of the converter. The output voltage is then regulated and applied to the load at a constant level, despite any changes in the input voltage.
The MOSFET switch is controlled by the feedback circuitry contained in the converter. This feedback system monitors the output voltage and pulses the switch on and off to maintain the output voltage. This feedback system also contains over voltage and over current protection circuitry to prevent any damage to the converter due to excessive input or output voltages.
