TVS - Varistors, MOVs are widely used electric components that provides surge protection for circuits. The VDR S10P350TSE application field and working principle is a commonly used Varistor that combines stablized protect voltage and high surge current withstanding capabilities with excellent surge endurance.
The VDR S10P350TSE is mostly used in Home Appliances, Telecom, Computer Electronic Products, Automotive and Industry applications. Due to its unipolar property, it prevents diodes from mounting in reverse direction. This makes it an ideal protection component for electronic circuits.
Working principle of the VDR S10P350TSE is quite simple. The device consists of several disk-like ceramic blocks which are layered. Every ceramic block contains zinc oxide 5 plus or minus 20% particles. These particles are then held together by a binder or a resin. The whole assembly is then electrically connected in series to the metallic discs at both its ends, providing a high resistance barrier.
When a voltage greater than its rated clamp voltage is applied across the device, the zinc oxide particles pressed together start to break down forming tiny channels in the material. Hits channels allows surge or transient currents to flow across it, thus providing surge suppresion or protection. The more voltage applied across the VDRs, the more channels are formed, thus allowing more current to flow while maintaining a stable protect voltage.
The VDR S10P350TSE achieves some unique features such as a clamp voltage range of 13.25V to 38.0V, Operating voltage range of 11.0V to 18.0V and Surge current of 3500A. It also has an extremely high pulse power dissipation ability at 2000W. In addition it has a wide operating temperature range of -25°C to 85°C.
The VDR S10P350TSE is a valuable protection component for circuits and a good example of how varistors can provide both high surges withstanding capabilities as well as excellent surge endurance.
