TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) devices provide an electric protection for power circuits and digital circuits from the dangers of spikes in voltage. Varistors, also referred to as a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR), are one type of these protection devices. They are also known as Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), and their application field and working principle both depend on the characteristics of their construction.

Metal oxide varistors are semiconductor devices which consist of quadrilateral granules made from a mixture of zinc oxide and other metal oxides. This means that the resistance of the material is significantly reduced. When the voltage applied to a varistor is below its rated value, the device has very high impedance (<10 megaohms). At or above its rated voltage, the granules become so close that the zinc oxide material behaves like a conductor. Thus, the resistance of the device suddenly drops to a very low level (20-30 ohms).
