VE17P00251K application field and working principle

TVS - Varistors, MOVs are essential component devices for protection circuits. VE17P00251K is a typical type of these components, intended for provide ESD and transient protection for circuits. Its main application fields and the working principle will be introduced in this paper.

VE17P00251K is mainly used to provide ESD and transient protection for telecommunication ports and data line interface circuits. For example, it can be applied in USB port, video port, serial port, and HDMI. Due to the wide voltage ranges, it can also be applied in protecting application of consumer electronic products such as video game consoles, laptop, and set top boxes.

VE17P00251K is a metal oxide varistor (MOV) based on zinc oxide material, which combines the advantages of ESD protection (in 1/2 sine wave 8/20 ms waveforms) and transient surge protection. It uses sintered zinc oxide and metal electrode components as its main parts. Its metal electrodes are made of special cladding processing, with high quality shielding, to reduce the interference to the circuit. The external size of the device is 0402, and the lead-free terminals are compatible with reflow or wave soldering process.

MOVs typically have a high impedance when voltage and current are within certain voltage and current ranges or not too high. When voltage or current exceeds the specified or rated values, it behaves as an electrical conductor with relatively low impedance. This action not only eliminates interference but also protects electronic circuits from electrical overshoots. Based on this mechanism of operation, the VE17P00251K is designed to provide effective ESD protection and surge protection with the following features:

  • Clamping voltage range (8/20ms waveform) between 5V – 18V
  • Working voltage range between 4V – 25V
  • Insulation resistance up to 500M Ω
  • Operating temperature range : -40°C ~ +85°C
  • Industry standard EIA-481 and EIA-305 specifications

The VE17P00251K is designed with a special multi-layer structure is to provide effective ESD protection as well as surge protection, and it prevents electrical overshoots through the following mechanisms:

  • When voltage slightly exceeds the rated value, irreversible molecular changes occur in the varistor, causing an increase in its conductivity. This increases the degree of conduction to absorb overshoots and maintain the voltage value within the specified value range.
  • When current exceeds the rated value of the varistor, the temperature increases, causing the varistor to absorb excessive current, thereby increasing its impedance and protecting connected circuits.

To ensure the effective operation of varistors, it is important to properly select installation parameters such as the rated voltage and current, as well as the size of the device. This is because the varistor’s performance is determined by its environment and its particular design.  VE17P00251K is an effective ESD and transient surge protector for consumer electronic products applications. Its characteristics enable it to protect circuits from interference and to protect circuits from overshoots or short circuits. To further improve the performance of the ESD and transient protection, proper installation parameters and device selection is highly recommended.
