The VSC8256YMR-01 device manufactured by Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation is a quint differential low power repeater, designed to fulfill the long haul fiber optic communication application requirements of the Telecommunications Industry. The VSC8256YMR-01 is a highly integrated 5-port repeater, with 4-lanes operating at 6.25Gbps data rate with auto negotiation support and can bridge between multiple ports having different data rate. It features an integrated differential receive path with gain control and latching and a differential transmit path with manual power level control.

Description

The VSC8256YMR-01 provides low power operation that allows multiple ports to be powered on/off with ease. It sends signals between two different rate ports, allowing a transparent mode of data transfer. This is done by incorporating a rate converter on each lane. This rate converter has a 12-bit muxer, which accommodates data rates between 0 to 3.2Gbps per lane. Therefore, the VSC8256YMR-01 is capable of handling multiple, non-simultaneous, data paths at different line rates.

The VSC8256YMR-01 provides a link between two different transmitors by providing clock-data-recovery and redriver functions. The clock-data-recovery units integrate multiple clock and data recovery circuits, for each of the five lanes, and are capable of handling multiple data rates. The device provides an input clock fail detector, and rate select pins can be used to determine the data path\'s rate.

Features

The VSC8256YMR-01 device features an integrated differential receive path with gain control and latching and a differential transmit path with manual power level control. It also includes various features for effective performance. These features include an automatic power-down mode, and an ultra-low input differential voltage operation for reduced power consumption. Working Principle

The device incorporates five differential circuits, each operating at 6.25Gbps, and having an embedded Clock-Data-Recovery circuit. Each differential lane is capable of handling a different data rate, up to 12Gb/s, allowing the device to handle multiple non-simultaneous paths.

In addition to this, the device provides manual gain control, which allows for fine tuning the magnitude of the differential signals. There is also an integrated differential offset detection pin, which can monitor the differential offset level of the signal. Whenever the differential offset rises above a pre-set threshold, an interrupt signal is sent.
