Working Principle
A FPGA is an integrated circuit (IC) that can be configured in the field, meaning the user can design a custom logic system on the chip, including data paths, timing, logic and control. The configuration is done by programming the FPGA with a design description written in a hardware description language such as Verilog or VHDL after which the FPGA can implement it.
The FPGA consists of many configurable blocks, called \'logic blocks\'. The logic blocks can be configured as various types of logic functions such as AND, OR and NOT gates, multiplexers, arithmetic logic units (ALU) and registers. The FPGA can also contain embedded blocks of logic called \'embedded arrays\'. Embedded arrays are blocks of logic pre-programmed to perform more complex tasks such as a processor core, a bus controller, or a RAM module.
XC6SLX100T-N3FG484C consists of 100 dynamic blocks, each consisting of 18 configurable slices. Each slice consists of 4 four-input Look-up Tables (LUTs), 4 Flip Flops and a block RAM of 180 bits. The device also includes several hard blocks such as a PLL, Multipliers, Adders, I/O blocks and Serial IO blocks. XC6SLX100T-N3FG484C has several interfaces such as 3.2V I/O and PCIe Gen1/2/3 that can be used for high-speed communication.
