XR76208EVB application field and working principle

The XR76208EVB is an integrated power supply evaluation board designed to support the XR76208 PWM controller and demonstrate the performance of a variety of standard applications used in the DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-line) SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) product segment. The XR76208EVB contains a single-stage off-line power supply schematic, showing an example of a different application. The board allows the evaluation of the XR76208 by providing a low cost method for hobbyists, students, engineers and researchers to evaluate the XR76208’s intended external components and observe the qualities and drawbacks of each particular solutions.

The XR76208EVB fully complies with the EN60950 safety standard and is UL1950 recognized. Using this platform users can experiment with a single-stage design creating multiple topologies. The XR76208EVB can also be used to evaluate the XR76208 multi-phase solution with up to 3 phases independently configurable and able to synchronize and operate mains voltage topologies such as; Half-Bridge, Full-Bridge, Active-Clamp, Active-Clamp with Back Boost, Flying Capacitor and more.

Working Principle

The operating principle behind the XR76208 is known as a pulse-width modulated (PWM) switched mode power supply (SMPS) and it works to regulate the electrical current or voltage of a power supply by quickly switching between the input power source for a given PWM period. This is done by rapidly switching on and off a series of MOSFETs that are connected to the input voltage source. When the circuit is on, the MOSFETs allow the electricity to flow, and when off, they block the flow of electricity. By actively controlling the on/off time and frequency of the switching, the voltage and current of the input voltage source can be precisely and accurately adjusted to the desired output voltage and current values.

The XR76208EVB offers a high level of control, allowing for very precise and complex voltage and current regulation of the input power source, resulting in higher efficiency and power factor at light load. It includes power factor correction and can be design around multiple topologies. In order to properly regulate the input power source the XR76208 requires a feedback loop to continuously monitor and adjust the values of the output voltage and current.

Applications

The XR76208EVB is a flexible and versatile design platform which enables users to experiment and develop custom switched mode power supplies for a wide variety of applications. A short list of possible applications for the XR76208EVB includes; consumer power adaptors, laptops and netbooks powering systems, embedded or industrial electronics, off-line LED lighting systems, battery chargers, UPS systems, and industrial motor drives.

The XR76208EVB also features an on-board output voltage adjust that allows the user to experiment with the voltage regulation capability of the XR76208, allowing the user to alter the output voltage allowing experiments involving the regulation of the input voltage, current, or a combination of both.

The XR76208EVB also includes other features that facilitate additional functionality for the XR76208. It includes a low profile heatsink and the ability to latch operation, allowing the user to learn the fundamentals behind the chip’s low-power operation. It also includes soft-start and over current protection to further expand on the protection capabilities.

The robust design capabilities of the XR76208EVB allow the user to explore a variety of power solutions as well as design proprietary solutions. It provides a low cost method of allowing the user to experiment and gain basic programming skills for the XR76208 chip.
