Thyristors – TRIACs are three-terminal semiconductor switches that lead to highly efficient and fast switching or controlling of current or power in an electronic circuit. The Z0107NA,116 is a four-layer thyristor – TRIAC, characterized by a high «trigger» common current and a low «trigger» voltage, made of a special sensitive gate material. This thyristor – TRIAC can be used in many applications such as AC lamp dimmers and phase control of low power motors, due to its low and high trigger currents.

The Z0107NA,116 consist of a PN semi-conductor structure with three independent terminal; the gate, main and auxiliary terminals. The gate terminal controls the conducting action when a negative trigger impulse is applied. This negative trigger impulse is limited to 5mA and a low trigger voltage of 5V. When a voltage is applied through the main and auxiliary terminals, the thyristor can switch on until the current falls below an established threshold, generally called the "holding current". The gate terminal also has a "holding current", which is the current it must reach to keep the current going. Once the gate holding current has been reached, if the main and auxiliary terminals are turned off, the device will remain in a conducting state even without a gate pulse.

The Z0107NA,116 has a maximum peak repetitive off-state voltages of 600V and a maximum peak on-state current of 10A. It is designed to operate in the AC or pulse mode and suitable for use in junction temperature range from 25 ˚C to 150 ˚C. Besides, the device has long life and is suitable for television and appliance control applications.

The Z0107NA,116 can be utilized in many application fields such as lighting equipment, small electronic equipment, home appliances and digital electronic control systems. For example, in a simple lighting circuit, when the gate of the thyristor is kept off, the device remains off and no current flows through the main and auxiliary terminals. This means the circuit will remain off and light will not be generated. When a pulse is applied to the gate, the thyristor will conduct and the current can flow through the main and auxiliary terminals and light will be generated. This type of applications demonstrated the typical switching mode of the Z0107NA,116.

The thyristor switch has many advantages over mechanical switches. Mechanical switches require physical contacts, which have a limited life span, and necessitates periodic cleaning and maintenance. In addition, such switches also exhibit contact noise when closing or opening, which can lead to unwanted noise in a sensitive electronic system. The thyristor does not require physical contacts and produces no noise; its switching speed is fast and its response time is about a millionth of a second.
