Diodes - Zener - Single category include a wide range of very special diodes commonly known as Zener diodes. Zener diodes are much superior to ordinary diodes because they are capable of regulating the flow of electricity when applied with a reverse voltage. They have a very sharp reverse breakdown voltage and a light load current, allowing for applications in voltage regulating, voltage limiting, reverse voltage trials, and surge current protection.The Zener diode ZPY10-TAP is an example of these type of diodes and its application field is mainly in safety systems, industrial and laboratory control and voltage networks.This diode has a reverse breakdown voltage of 10V and can operate at steady state in currents up to 500mA. It can also withstand waveform oscillations with 500V peak and frequencies up to 500MHz.The working principle of a Zener diode lies in its junction, when it is applied with a reverse voltage and the circuit is closed. As the voltage increases, both the primary and the auxiliary windings in the circuit, when connected together, act as a single winding. As the current flows, due to the combined effect of the two windings, the current primarily flows through the auxiliary winding, until the diode’s threshold voltage is reached. That is when electrons avail themselves and the current flowing through the diode’s junction accelerates exponentially. This creates a short circuit across the diode’s junction, allowing the current to flow in both directions and thus regulate the voltage applied on the device.The ability of Zener diodes to regulate the current and minimize variations in the output voltage allows for the building of filtered DC power supplies and AC-DC converters. For example, a voltage regulator circuit using a Zener diode can be used to regulate the voltage to a precise level while filtering out any spike, surges or line interference.The ZPY10-TAP Zener diode is also used to develop linear and switch-mode circuits and is ideal for battery operated devices that require precise operations. Its overall performance makes it suitable for industrial control, precision measurement and communications applications.
