A UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) is an interface used to bridge existing synchronous serial communication systems with asynchronous communication systems. The SC16C850SVIBS,151 is a UART controller that provides bi-directional serial and single-wire communication, supporting four modes of bi-directional half-duplex, and two modes of single-wire full-duplex data communication.The SC16C850SVIBS,151 includes integrated RS-232 level shifting and break detection that improves reliability when interfacing with external communications protocols and hardware. It supports various data rates, which can be programmed and controlled using a highly flexible clock control. The UART controller also includes a rich set of general-purpose peripheral functions, such as power-down mode, a watchdog timer, eight general-purpose I/O functions, and three programmable chip select outputs.The SC16C850SVIBS,151 interface is ideal for applications that require time-critical communications and high-data throughput, such as machine-to-machine connectivity, process control and monitoring, and medical data transfer. It is also well suited for low power and low cost applications, such as handset, consumer, and industrial control interfaces.The working principle of the SC16C850SVIBS,151 involves a continuous exchange of data between two endpoints, usually between a host processor and peripherals. Data is sent and received asynchronously over a communication interface, such as RS-232 or single-wire. The SC16C850SVIBS,151 controls the serial communication process, detecting and converting the data stream into a frame that is readable by the host controller.In receive mode, data entering the SC16C850SVIBS,151 is detected by the Receiver Data Input pin, which is then converted into a frame by the UART controller. The frame is stored in the receive buffer and can be read by the host processor when the data is ready.In transmit mode, data is sent from the host processor to the SC16C850SVIBS,151’s Receiver Data Input pin. The data is then sent out by the transmitter output pin to the intended target.The SC16C850SVIBS,151 also features a parity generation and checking circuit that can be used to detect errors in transmission. The controller also supports frequency detection protocols, such as IrDA and HART.The SC16C850SVIBS,151 is designed for a maximum transfer rate of 1Mbps, making it suitable for applications that require high data throughput.
