LED MARKET PROSPECTS: MICRO/MINI LED、3D SENSING

With the obvious performance advantage, Micro LED will become the mainstream of the next generation of display technology. Micro LED refers to the high-density micro-size LED array integrated on the chip, each pixel is addressed, driven separately, with self-luminous characteristics. Compared with the current display technology mainstream OLED and LCD, MicroLED structure is simpler, performance advantages are more obvious, with high brightness, low energy consumption, long service life, no image imprinting, fast response, etc., can be widely used in panel displays, AR /VR devices, outdoor displays, head-mounted displays (HMD), head-up displays (HUD), infinite optical communications, projectors, etc. Currently, Apple acquired LuxVue Technologies, Inc., and deployed Micro LEDs in the wearable device market. Samsung and Sony have deployed Micro LED large-screen display applications, and respectively introduced Micro LED products "CLEDIS" and "The Wall". Vuzix and British semiconductor company Plessey have jointly developed the Micro LED display engine for next-generation AR smart glasses. According to forecasts, the MicroLED display market will reach 330 million units by 2025, and the market output will reach 2.891 billion US dollars.


Micro LED, due to the critical technology and equipment problems such as massive transfer, is difficult to achieve mass production in the short term. As a transition of Micro LED display technology, Mini LED is more mature in manufacturing technology and more complete in production equipment, making it easy to mass-produce related products. Mini LED adopts backlight design, microchip and other technologies to achieve thin, high image quality, low power consumption and other characteristics. The performance level is close to OLED, which is superior to OLED in brightness and color development. Mini LED is based on the application of backlight, and can be applied to automotive panels, outdoor displays, large-size TVs, mobile phones, e-sports and other fields. According to Jibang Consulting, the overall Mini LED output value will reach US$1 billion in 2023. At present, Taiwan's LED manufacturers are very active in the layout of Mini LED. Jingdian, Ronda, Accumulation, Innolux, AUO, Hongqi and Yiguang all said that they will realize mass production of Mini LED products this year. The mainland manufacturer Guoxing Optoelectronics and the first launch of the mass production of Mini LED products in early June accelerated the industry into the P0.X era
 

Compared with LED and EEL, VCSEL is a 3D camera infrared light source, which is superior in terms of accuracy, miniaturization, low power consumption and reliability. With the maturity of VCSEL chip technology, 3D Sensing, which is its core component, has entered the field of development, including in vivo detection, iris recognition, AR/VR technology, robot recognition and robotic hedging, and automatic driving assistance. Recently, the main application of 3D Sensing is mobile phone. The iPhone X is equipped with 3D structured optical module for the first time, leading the 3D Sensing consumer market. Apple's 3D Sensing supply chain is relatively complete, Lumentum, II-VI, Finisar, IQE, etc. have been added. In the next few years, the 3D Sensing market will grow rapidly. By 2023, 3DSensing will have a market space of US$18 billion and a compound growth rate of 44% from 2018 to 2023. Among them, 3D Sensing's penetration rate in the smartphone market continues to increase, and the penetration rate of 3D Sensing is expected to increase from 2.1% in 2017 to 28.6% in 2020.
