MOS Technology SMC 33CA-M3/57T (1.5SMC33CA-M3/57T) devices are a family of Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes which are designed for protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge stress without introducing series inductance or capacitance, which could distort signal integrity. They feature dual-parallel configurations for enhanced perfor mance, low capacitance, and low clamping voltages. With their typically fast response times, these devices are suitable for ESD protection on I/O lines.

Working Principle

The SMC33CA-M3/57T devices are based on a bidirectional TVS diode structure, which allows for protection in both the positive and negative polarities against transient events. The electrical operation of the device results from the diode’s dynamic behavior which is used to clamp transients. Voltages and currents are clamped by an avalanche breakdown, which creates a conductive path for the current flow from the anode to the cathode. When a transient occurs, the diode is in a resistive mode and acts as a conductor.

When the transient event is terminated, the diode begins to recover its semi-conductive state, which blocks the current flow. This structure improves the surge capability of the device and also decreases the voltage clamping action relative to single diode counterparts.
