A transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode is an electrical component used in electronic circuits to protect equipment from voltage spikes greater than a specified limit. The 1.5SMC47A TR13 is a type of unidirectional TVS diode that is mainly used to protect electronic components from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and lightning-induced transients. The 1.5SMC47A TR13 is a unidirectional TVS diode which stems from the Silicon avalanche zener diode (SAZD) structure. It is designed to clamp the transient voltage to a normal operational level. The metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS), which is part of the device structure, acts as a voltage regulator, allowing current conduction only when the transient voltage exceeds the breakdown rating. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, an avalanche effect is triggered, allowing the current to be conducted when the device is in forward biased.
When an overvoltage is applied on the 1.5SMC47A TR13, the normal operation of the device is disrupted and it reaches a breakdown voltage. If this is higher than the rated P-N junction breakdown voltage, then the avalanche brings the voltage to the clamping voltage of the device. The clamping of the voltage is a limiting phenomenon of the diode, like the avalanche effect, which is similar to a zener diode breakdown, but is much faster. This operation mode of the device is very useful for providing protection against overvoltages.
