Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Electrolytic capacitors are one of the most important electronic components and are widely used in various circuits such as industrial automation,analog devices, communication, lighting and home appliances.One of these models is the 157LBB400M2DC, an aluminum electrolytic capacitor.

Application Field

This capacitor is rated for a maximum working voltage of 450v DC and is equipped with a low impedance screw terminal suitable for quick connect applications.It is primarily used in high power applications such as filtering, bypass and power supply.It is also suitable for use in ignition coil, switching power supply, drive motors, electric lawn mowers and other power applications.

Working Principle

An electrolytic capacitor works by using two layers of aluminum foil, one insulated by an oxide layer, which acts as a dielectric. The oxide layer is produced as a result of an electrolytic process. The second layer of aluminum foil strips are the positive and negative terminals, where a wet electrolyte is applied, and the metal ions form an electrical bridge across them.When an instantaneous voltage is applied, electrolytic capacitors offer a wide variation of capacitance values. This is done with increased current flow resulting from lowered dielectric resistance. When the voltage ceases, the stored energy is released and the electrons have the ability to travel freely across the electrolyte bridge. As the voltage decreases, the electron mobility drops and resistance increases, leading to slower electron transport.

Change in Capacitance with Temperature

The capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors can vary with changing temperature, however, this is less significant than the variations in voltage ratings. The capacitance decreases as the temperature increases. Depending on the operating temperature, an additional capacitance value must be determined when the capacitor is working at minimum temperature. The greatest temperature influence on capacitance occurs at lower temperatures and with the large capacitance values.
