Jumper Wires

Jumper Wires are a type of electrical connector available as insulated or uninsulated wires, or pre-crimped leads that are used in a variety of electrical and electronic connections. These are frequently used in solderless breadboard and perfboard based prototypes, prototype boards, wire-wrapping. They are also available in several configurations, such as thru-hole, surface mount, low profile or high density, and standard, quick-connect, and insulated versions.

The applications extend from prototyping and R&D to production use in all types of equipment. They are employed in various markets, including automotive, medical, military/aerospace, industrial, cellular, audio, lighting, and even household and consumer goods. Selecting the right type of jumper wires depends on the type of application you are dealing with, the equipment manufacturer\'s specification, and the environmental conditions in which the product is used, among other factors.

Working Principle of Jumper Wires

The basic working principle of jumper wires is that they can provide quick connections for making connections between two electrical components or circuits. The insulated type of jumper wires consists of a copper core, usually insulated with PVC or rubber. When connected, the inner core of the jumper wire carries the electrical current between the two components or circuits. The insulation protects against any short-circuits or other electrical faults that may occur.

The type of insulating material is important depending on the intended application. PVC, for example, is susceptible to heat and is not suitable for high-temperature applications. Rubber is more resistant to high temperatures and is therefore preferred in many high-current applications. Some types of jumper wires also include strain relief to protect the connections from mechanical damage.

Pre-Crimped Leads

Pre-crimped leads are usually made of tin-coated copper or pure copper wires which are crimped onto connectors, and are commonly used in electrical and electronic prototyping. They provide a solid connection and are also designed with vibration and shock-resistance features.

Pre-crimped lead connectors are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing them to be used in the most demanding applications. They come in straight, right angle, or bent versions, and with insulation in the form of plastic jackets, heat-shrink tubing, and elastomer sleeving. In most cases, they can be pre-sleeved or pre-set to meet the requirements of any application.

The working principle of pre-crimped leads is similar to that of Jumper Wires. When connected, the copper wires pass the required electrical current from one component to another. Pre-crimped leads are simpler to use than jumper wires, as they are already crimped and connected at the factory. This saves time and effort, and also helps ensure a tight and reliable connection.
