The Zener break process involves a threshold point where the device stops behaving as a traditional diode and turn into a voltage-dependent resistor. When the voltage breakdown of the devices exceed the Volt-ampere characteristics of the device, electrons rush through the active area and flow in the direction of the PN junction to form an avalanche current. As this avalanche current passes through the device, a build-up of electrostatic field collects around the PN junction which causes a breakdown of electrons, resulting in the Zener junction and the preset voltage of the device.
