The 1N2821B diode is a type of Zener diode which is capable of withstanding higher voltage than that of regular diodes and capable of producing a precise voltage drop at reverse bias. It is classified as a Zener diode, single type. It is generally used to provide a constant voltage reference in a variety of applications.

Structure & Characteristic of 1N2821B

The 1N2821B diode comprises of two P-N junctions arranged symmetrically, one P-N junction is at the anode and other is at the cathode. It has a Zener voltage rating of 6 Volt. Its rated power dissipation is 500 mW. It has a peak reverse voltage of 10 V.

Working Principle

The 1N2821B diode is a type of Zener diode. Its working principle is based on the principle of potential barrier. When a small potential is applied to the diode it starts to conduct. It conducts in forward direction when a positive potential is applied to anode and negative potential to the cathode. When the anode voltage exceeds the Zener voltage of 6V, the P-N junction of the diode breaks down inversely. At this time the junction behaves like two back-to-back parallel diodes. It has a high capacitance and very low-resistance path. The current through the diode remains constant.

Application Field

The 1N2821B diode has various applications in different fields such as regulation, switches, amplitude stabilization, transient suppression, noise suppression and voltage reference. Due to its low reverse leakage current, it is well suited for use in numerous circuit protection applications. It’s most common application is as voltage reference for analog-to-digital converters. It is also used in power supply circuits for stabilizing the output voltage. It is also used for protecting the power supplies from over-current and over-voltage conditions. Moreover, it finds application in communications and telecommunication circuits.
