Application field

1N4496US is designed to operate in reverse bias condition or potentials of up to 5V or 6V. It is typically used in voltage regulation, voltage clamping, and overvoltage protection applications. It can also be used as a voltage reference in high voltage systems or as a current limiting device in low voltage circuits. Furthermore, 1N4496US is ideal for driving RGB LEDs and can be used to control the brightness of these LEDs.

Working principle

When a voltage is applied to the 1N4496US diode, it is limited to the rated zener voltage level. At such point, the current flowing through the diode drops to a low level called the pinch off current. As a result, the diode acts like an open circuit at the zener voltage level, thus preventing current from flowing through it.When a reverse voltage is applied to the diode, the diode will pass the current if the voltage is below the zener voltage limit. If the voltage is higher than the zener voltage, the current through the diode will be limited to the pinch off current. Thus, this diode can be used for voltage regulation and for overvoltage protection applications.When used as a current limiter, 1N4496US can be connected in series with a load, such as a motor or a resistor. When the current reaches the specified limit, the diode will reduce or stop the current flow, thus protecting the device from damage. InRGB LEDs, 1N4496US diodes can be used to control the brightness of the LEDs by adjusting the current flow.
