1N5340C/TR12 is a 3.4V Zener diode, and it is included in Diodes - Zener - Single category. It is a three-terminal axial lead, hermetically sealed, with PbSn or PbSnAg termination. With the breakdown voltage of 3.4V, this diode has a power dissipation rating of 500mW.

The working principle of 1N5340C/TR12 is through the Zener process. Like all Zener diodes, it has a reverse voltage breakdown behaviour, with a slope increasing as the voltage goes up. If a voltage higher than 3.4V is applied between the two terminals, electrons are projected across the junction, creating a current that flows in the reverse direction and assisting the breakdown, then the current starts flowing with just modest increasing on the applied voltage.
The dynamic resistance of 1N5340C/TR12, defined as the reciprocal of the slope dV/dI at the Zener voltage, is about 0.4 ohms. This dynamic resistance of 1N5340C/TR12 is very low, meaning that the regulation factor keeps the output voltage low and constant, regardless of the load.
When forward voltage is applied, the current passing through is directly proportional with the applied voltage. However, when the applied voltage is between 0 and 3.4V, the current is almost 0. This means that the application of 1N5340C/TR12 Zener diode is useful when the ideal voltage is 3.4V, and it helps detecting any current passing through and avoid any excess of current running through the circuit.
1N5340C/TR12 is a leakage current of only 0.2mA maximum and its voltage tolerance ranges between 25.7V up to 5%. Its function can be classified as low power reverse voltage protection, polarity indicator or voltage testing and clamping application.
In terms of its forward voltage, 1N5340C/TR12 uses about 0.4V. This is slightly higher than 1N914, the other Zener most commonly used, but the difference is not big enough to damage the components on the circuit.
