A 1N5359/TR8 is an axial-lead Zener diode, meaning that its anode and cathode leads both project out of the same side of the package. As with all diodes, it limits the direction of current flowing through it: current flows freely through it in one direction, however current in the other direction, though technically still possible, is heavily resisted. However, whereas a normal diode\'s one-directionality is itself largely unchanging, the 1N5359\'s conduction in the reverse direction is heavily dependent on the voltage across it: up to a certain voltage the conduction remains low, however, once the Zener voltage is exceeded, conduction rapidly increases.In practical terms, this means that the 1N5359/TR8 can be applied in any circuit where a reliable and stable voltage needs to be maintained, a setting which the device will maintain regardless of any current drawn. On the other hand, if the voltage drops too far, the device will abruptly increase conduction and therefore draw increasing amounts of current until the required voltage is restored.
The most obvious application in which the 1N5359/TR8 excels is within voltage regulation circuits.
