At the first stage,avalanche breakdown occurs when the device is subjected to a high reverse voltage, usually around 7V. This causes the electrons to be accelerated to a high speed and small avalanches of electrons be created. This eventually produces a conductive channel through the depletion region.The next stage is zener breakdown, which happens when the reverse voltage reaches the zener voltage of the device, typically around 5V. This leads to a large number of electrons being injected into the reverse-biased junction and creating a conductive path with a very low resistance. As a result, the voltage across the device remains at the Zener voltage, even when the input voltage fluctuate.In the third stage, thermal heating takes place. As the Zener current increases, it causes thermal heat to be generated which can destroy the device. To prevent this, thermal balance must be achieved by simultaneously dissipating the heat with a heatsink.The fourth stage is recovery. When the input voltage decreases, the Zener current decreases and the device returns to its original steady state. Overall, the 1N5929BRL zener diode is a versatile device that can be used for a variety of applications.
