1N5938P/TR12 Application Field and Working Principle1N5938P/TR12 diodes belong to the Zener Single diode family. They are designed for a very specific purpose, to protect sensitive electronic components from short circuits, voltage surges, and other types of electrical over-loads. The 1N5938P/TR12 has a breakdown voltage of 12V with a tolerance of 5% which makes it ideal for use in a variety of applications.The 1N5938P/TR12 has a standard DO-35 package. This package is designed in such a way that it optimizes the diode’s heat dissipation and reduces the size of any electrical components mounted in proximity. The diode itself is mounted on its cathode of a small perspex housing that has its own internal heat-sink. This heat-sink also helps reduce the size of any components mounted in close proximity.The working principle of the 1N5938P/TR12 is very straightforward. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode of the diode, electrons are drawn to the anode and the diode becomes "forward biased". This causes current to flow through the diode in the direction from the anode to the cathode. When the voltage applied to diode exceeds the diode’s breakdown voltage, the diode begins to conduct / current flow in the opposite direction. This is known as the "reverse breakdown" of the diode. Unless the reverse current is limited, the diode can be damaged or destroyed due to excessive current.The main application field of 1N5938P/TR12 is protection of discrete components or integrated circuits from voltages that exceeds their maximum ratings. These diodes can also be used in switching applications because they are highly reliable and resistant to signals that occur intermittently. They are also highly efficient and can handle quite large current spikes without being damaged.In addition to protection from transient voltages and current spikes, 1N5938P/TR12 diodes can also be used to regulate the output of adjustable voltage regulators.
