Diodes – Rectifiers – Single
A single rectifier is a two-terminal electronic device that takes AC voltage inputs and converts them into DC voltage outputs. The most common application of a single rectifier is in the rectification of alternating current – the conversion of AC voltage into DC voltage. The 1N6640US is a single rectifier that can be used to rectify AC voltage with a maximum peak repetitive reverse voltage of 400 volts and a maximum average forward rectified current (IO) of 4.0A.The principle of operation of the 1N6640US is based on the surge of electric current when an electric field is applied between the two terminals of the rectifier. As an AC voltage is applied across the terminals, the resulting electric field causes electrons to move from one terminal to the other, resulting in an electric current through the external circuit. The direction of current flow is determined by the direction of the electric field, which is determined by the polarity of the AC voltage. As the electric field fluctuates with the changing polarity of the AC voltage, the current in the external circuit will alternate between the directions, occurring in a waveform.The purpose of the 1N6640US is to convert the alternating current into a unidirectional current. This is accomplished by the semiconductor material within the rectifier. The semiconductor material within the 1N6640US is composed of alternating layers of P-type and N-type silicon, forming “P-N junctions” between the layers. The P-type and N-type materials form a diode – an electronic device that will allow current to flow in one direction, but not in the other. In the case of the 1N6640US, the diode allows electric current to flow from the P-layer to the N-layer while blocking the reverse current flow. Thus, the alternating electric field is converted into a unidirectional electric current through the external circuit.In addition to converting AC voltage into DC voltage, the 1N6640US can also be used as a power switch. The same P-N junctions that allow the rectifier to convert AC into DC can also be used to switch the power source on or off. This is accomplished by controlling the voltage applied to the PN junctions, which will determine the direction of the electric current flow. If the voltage is set to forward bias the PN junctions, an electric current will flow from the P side to the N side. Conversely, if the voltage is set to reverse bias the PN junctions, no current will flow through the device. This is known as “breakdown voltage” and is used to control the power flowing through the external circuit.The 1N6640US is a versatile device that can be used for a variety of applications including power supplies, voltage regulators, DC-DC converters, and more.
