The 1N936A is a general-purpose Zener diode with a wide range of applications. It is a single diode with a Zener breakdown voltage range of 5.1 to 47 volts. The device can be used as a voltage-stabilizing device (VSR) or in a regulation circuit to provide a regulated DCoutput. It is also useful as a simple voltage-limiting device or in DC-DC buck converters and switching regulator circuits.
The basic operation of a Zener diode involves dissipation of surplus energy in excess of a specified amount. This surplus energy is dissipated as heat via reversed biased junction diodes. The power losses of the junction occur across the barrier potential or the reverse-biased junction. Besides this, Zener diodes also exhibit a slightly different behavior with respect to their reverse current-voltage characteristics. The device offers a predictable, stable voltage drop at a well-defined voltage when the current passes through its Zener region. This behavior is referred to as Zener breakdown and it\'s the regulator action that is responsible for the stable operation of the 1N936A.
The 1N936A offers superior performance when compared to conventional linear series-pass regulators. It can be used in a wide range of applications including as an alternative to voltage regulators in low-power designs. It is ideal for stabilization of voltage regulators in power supplies and in power-regulating circuits such as DC-DC step up/down converters and switching regulators.

This is the Zener effect or breakdown voltage of the diode. As a result, a voltage regulated output is achieved.
The 1N936A also offers low output impedance and excellent temperature stability. Its high reverse-leakage current ensures good load-regulating performance and low series resistance ensures low voltage drops across the diode. The device also features a wide operating temperature range (-55 to +125 degrees Celsius) and a standard operating voltage of 5.1 to 47 volts.
