Diodes - Zener - Single
1N969B TR is a type of Zener diode, which has a single junction. It is typically packaged in a glass or plastic case and has two metal electrodes which are connected, one of which is connected to the anode and the second to the cathode. Application Field
Zener diodes are often used as voltage regulation devices in linear regulators, switched mode power supplies and other power supplies. 1N969B TRs are used in a variety of applications, including the protection of sensitive electronics, surge protection, voltage regulation and over-voltage protection. Additionally, they can be used in series with a resistor to create a voltage-divider.
Working Principle
When reverse biased, a Zener diode operates like a normal diode, clamping the reverse voltage so that the voltage across the diode remains below the specified breakdown voltage of the diode, (known as the Zener voltage or knee voltage). When this voltage is reached, the diode allows a small amount of current to flow through the circuit, allowing the voltage at the anode of the diode to rise. This causes a change in the diode\'s reverse current, causing it to increase rapidly. This provides a regulated voltage at the anode of the diode and so serves as a voltage regulator.
When operated as a voltage-divider, the Zener diode limits the voltage across the resistor to the breakdown voltage of the diode. This prevents large amounts of current flowing through the resistor, ensuring that it remains in the linear region of its operating curve. The resulting output voltage can be calculated by multiplying the Zener voltage across the diode by the ratio of the resistance to the sum of the resistors.
