Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)
Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are devices that provide protection to electrical equipment from destructive surges in electrical currents. They are particularly important in areas where lightning is a frequent occurrence, and irregular or high voltage surges threaten the functioning of delicate electronic systems. GDT’s are generally used along with surge arresters, which are devices that use a series of capacitors to protect circuits from transient overvoltages.GDT\'s use a gas-filled glass tube, or a spark gap, to dissipate surges of electricity. The spark gap is formed when two metal electrodes, commonly known as the anode and the cathode, are held a short distance apart, allowing a gas-filled space to exist between them. When a surge causes a high voltage difference between the two electrodes, the gas breaks down and forms an ionized path, conducting the current away from the sensitive electronic components.The electrodes in a GDT are usually made of copper, although other materials such as silver or stainless steel may also be used. The distance between the anode and cathode, known as the spark gap, influences the GDT’s performance. This distance can range from a few millimeters to a few centimeters, with larger spark gaps capable of conducting larger currents. The current-carrying capacity of GDT’s can range from a few millivolts (mV) to several hundred volts (V).GDT’s are typically used in applications where transient overvoltages, such as those caused by lightning, are likely to occur. The devices are commonly found in telecommunications, automotive and power systems, and are also frequently used to protect medical or laboratory equipment from high-voltage surges. GDT’s are preferred over other types of surge arresters due to their relatively low cost and small size.When a surge of electricity passes through the GDT, the electrodes in the spark gap become heated and may glow, creating a faint but visible orange-blue spark. This is a sign that the GDT is functioning correctly and dissipating the current. The metal electrodes in the device can eventually become worn out, although they can usually be replaced without difficulty.GDT’s are especially useful for areas where thunderstorms are common and offer effective protection against destructive surges of electricity.
