Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are a specialized form of high-voltage surge arresters. As with other surge arresters, they are designed to protect electrical equipment from transient voltage spikes, such as lightning strikes. Specifically, GDTs, or air gaps, serve as a direct connection between the high voltage line and ground. During periods of high voltage, GDTs will short circuit the high voltage surge to ground, thereby providing protection to downstream electrical equipment.
