The 20TQ045 is a rectifying diode of the single type. It is suited for medium- and high-speed automated mounting processes. The 20TQ045 works by forming an electrically conductive path in only one direction. In this way, it permits current to flow in one direction only, blocking current flow in the reverse direction. This is done through a diode junction between two regions formed in the semiconductor material.
As current flows through the diode, some of the energy is lost due to the forward voltage drop across the junction. This is because the electrons must overcome the resistive barrier created by the majority carriers in the junction. This forward voltage drop varies depending on the type of diode, but for the 20TQ045 it has a maximum value of 0.6 Volts.
The 20TQ045 also exhibits a low breakdown voltage. This is due to the built-in electric field in the junction that increases with increasing voltage above the break-over point. When the electric field exceeds a certain threshold value, the depletion layer breaks down and current flow starts. Its maximum reverse voltage is rated at 40 Volts.
When the forward voltage is applied, the anode of the diode becomes more positive than the cathode, creating a built-in potential barrier that prevents the current from flowing in the reverse direction. This, in turn, allows the diode to regulate the flow of current, while preventing excessive amounts of current from passing through the device in the reverse direction.
