Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) are two of the most common sources of interference in electronic equipment. RFI is a high frequency electrical and/or sonic disturbance that can occur in cable connections, and EMI is an electromagnetic field that can interfere with the operation of electronic equipment. Both are considered electromagnetic interference (EMI) and can cause problems for devices if left unchecked.
RFI and EMI shielding is the process of containing or controlling the RF or electromagnetic energy, often referred to as EMI shielding or RF shielding. It involves the use of insulation materials to create an effective barrier which limits the energy migration of unwanted signals that can interfere with the operation of electronic components or devices. The degree of protection or shielding effectiveness is usually determined by the static and dynamic parameters of the insulating material.
To further reduce the negative effects of EMI, RFI and EMI absorbing materials are used. These materials absorbs RF or EMI energy, instead of reflecting it like metalized shielding does. RF and EMI absorbing materials are materials that dissipate energy in the form of heat, which results in the blocking or absorption of the EMI or RF field.
One type of RFI and EMI absorbing materials commonly used is absorptive foam, which is composed of a foam base material with an embedded mesh or conductive particles. The foam absorbs the energy of the EMI or RF field, as well as the sound waves generated by the EMI or RF field, which significantly reduces the level of interference. Other types of absorbing materials are metals like aluminum, copper, or silver, fabric, or polyurethane.
Overall, RFI and EMI absorbing and shielding materials are designed to reduce the harmful effects of EMI and RFI, which can interfere with the operation of electronic components and devices. These materials perform their job by diffusing, blocking, and/or absorbing the energy of the EMI or RF field, either by reflecting the energy or dissipating it as heat. Although it takes a variety of materials to complete the job, overall, these materials work together to create an effective barrier against EMI and RFI.
