The functioning of a Zener diode is based on the principles of a PN junction diode, also known as a semiconductor diode. This component works in two main ways; both with a positive voltage applied, and with a negative voltage applied. In both cases, the basic principle is the same; the voltage applied to the junction causes charge carriers to move from one side of the junction to the other.

When a positive voltage is applied, the charge carriers on the N-type side of the junction move towards the P-type side. This causes an electrical current to flow through the diode, known as forward bias. On the other hand, if a negative voltage is applied, the charge carriers move away from the junction, leading to what is known as reverse bias. During this process, no current flows through the diode.

However, with Zener diodes, a reverse voltage can be applied to the junction, up to a certain level without breaking it. Once the reverse voltage reaches this threshold, known as the breakdown voltage of the diode, the conduction of the current will increase significantly. This is due to the fact that more charge carriers are now able to pass through the junction, allowing the current to flow.

As a result, a Zener diode is able to protect components and circuits from high voltage surges, as it limits current as soon as the reverse voltage reaches a certain level. In addition, this component can also be used for voltage level shifting applications, as it is able to regulate the voltage and current levels of a given circuit.
