The 2EZ11D10/TR8 is a zener diode, a type of single diode with a special capability, which finds its application in the fields of voltage regulation and pulse generation. It is designed to provide very small voltages from source voltages up to 6 volts, but its range can extend to several hundreds of volts.

Zener diodes have a reverse breakdown voltage, normally referred to as the knee-point voltage or the Zener voltage. When a voltage higher than this knee-point is applied to the diode, electrons in the P-N junction are freed with enough energy to cross the junction and enter the N-type material, creating an avalanche effect. This produces a readily controllable current which helps regulate the output voltage.

Due to the electrons\' movement, Zener diodes produce a much larger reverse current than that of a normal diode at higher voltage, converting AC to DC. Therefore, it is widely used in the field of voltage regulation, where input voltages above the Zener voltage need to be clamped. The 2EZ11D10/TR8 wherein supports high-speed switching as well as noise suppression.

More commonly, Zener diodes are used in an analogous fashion as a voltage reference source. By orienting the diode in a ‘front to back’ configuration in a power circuit, it can be used to generate a relatively constant output voltage for both regulated and unregulated power supply designs. A Zener diode-based circuit can be used to generate square-wave pulses with very high speed. Since this component can be switched between its ‘forward-biased’ and ‘reverse-biased’ region, it can be used to generate clean clock signals of different frequency.
