2EZ160D2/TR8 Application Field and Working Principle

2EZ160D2/TR8 is a silicon epitaxial planar power Zener diode in DO-35 plastic package which can be rated for 160V and 300mW, with general purpose and medium impedance for both unidirectional, and bidirectional applications. This Zener diode is mainly used in voltage regulation, voltage clamping, reverse protection, clipping, and various other related applications. This diode is made in compliance with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) regulations issued by the European Union.

The main application of this power Zener diode is voltage regulation by providing a constant voltage drop across its output. It is mainly used in low and medium power applications, especially in power regulator circuits due to its low power consumption which helps to reduce the size and weight of the power supply it is used in. It is also used in power switching circuits where it serves as a surge protector against reverse voltage, and also in filtering circuits where it helps to control transient signals.

It is also used in automotive and audio industry, as well as in computer and communication systems. It is also used in telecommunications and networking applications as part of the power supply circuit.

2EZ160D2/TR8 Working Principle

The working principle of this power Zener diode is based on the PN junction diode. When forward biased, the N-type material and the P-type material forms a PN junction. This PN junction helps the diode to get operated in two modes when current is passing through it in both forward and reverse direction. In forward biased mode, it allows the passing of current while in the reverse biased mode the reverse current is blocked.

When reverse biased, the Zener breakdown voltage is generated across the junction. When the reverse voltage exceeds this breakdown voltage, the power Zener diode allows the passing of reverse current due to the very large electric field generated at the junction. This large electric field generates a large number of electrons near the junction which causes a negative resistance. This negative resistance leads to the flow of current in reverse direction.

The reverse current flow decreases the reverse voltage below the breakdown voltage achieving a stable output voltage across the Zener diode. This stable voltage is further used in various applications such as voltage regulation, voltage clamping, and reverse protection.
