Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are capacitors that use both an anode and cathode made of aluminum. They have two layers, the anode being aluminum foil covered with an oxide film, and the cathode being an aluminum foil as well. A substance, typically a gel, holds the two layers together and can contain other additives such as liquid electrolyte and stabilizers to help prevent corrosion and leaking.

They are also very reliable and relatively inexpensive and are commonly used in consumer electronics, power supplies, audio equipment, and many other applications where larger capacitances are needed.
