The 3KP11CA is a silicon avalanche diode, or SAD, which belongs to a type of device known as a Transient Voltage Suppressor, or TVS for short. TVSs are components used to clamp voltages to specific levels, protecting sensitive components from damage due to over-voltages which can be generated by lightning strikes, line transients, or other sources of high voltage. The 3KP11CA is a unidirectional SAD that is designed to protect circuits from voltage transients on lines with 15V to 24V DC supply voltages, and can provide protection up to a peak pulse power of 11 kilovolts. As the device is non-polarized, it can be used in AC as well as DC circuits.

The 3KP11CA comprises of a single diode that has been formed by two heavily doped layers of a P-type and an N-type semiconductor, and the junction between these two layers is called the avalanche breakdown region. This breakdown region is designed to be very small, and so it requires a certain voltage in order to become conductive. As soon as this threshold voltage is exceeded, avalanche breakdown occurs, and the normally non-conductive junction is swamped by an avalanche of electrons and holes. The result of this avalanche is that the current through the device increases rapidly, shorting out the external voltage and protecting the circuit.

This unique characteristic of the 3KP11CA means that it can be used in a wide range of applications in order to protect circuits from transient voltage events.
