Optoisolators – Transistor, Photovoltaic Output, such as 4N35-X016, are electronic devices that use optical isolation to transmit a signal from a source to a destination in order to provide a degree of electrical isolation between the two. It ensures the complete safety for the person handling it and also extends the integrity of the system by preventing damage due to short circuits, overload, electrical spikes, and other external influences. There are two main types of optoisolators: transistor photovoltaic output types and photocouplers.

4N35-X016 is a type of optoisolator within the transistor photovoltaic output category, and it is widely used in applications such as a circuit breaker, a power source switch, a timer, and a signal/data transmission interface. It is oftentimes used in applications where a low drive current is required, and it is able to provide a current range of up to 1 mA. The fundamental working principle of 4N35-X016 relies on the transmission of a DC voltage between the collector and the emitter of a transistor.

Upon activating the switching element, the collector voltage rises slowly, which in turn drives the transistor into a weak saturation state. This creates an electric field in the anode cathode space of the semiconductor which allows electrons to flow from the excited atom core, resulting in the emission of photons. The photon energy is then converted back to electrical energy at the photo-sensitive surface, inducing electrical current in the base-collector junction. As the electicity is further conducted into the emitter side, the current is eventually switched "on".

4N35-X016 also comes with a number of integrated features such as a built-in capacitor for noise suppression and extra protection. It can be used in temperatures ranging from -55°C – 125°C, and offers a high level of protection against electrical noise that is up to 4.5 kV RMS. Furthermore, it also has a high surge resistance of 105 V/μA. As such, 4N35-X016 is one of the most reliable optoisolators available on the market, and it is widely used for many applications including signal transmission, control and protection of high voltages, and as a switching element.
