An optoisolator is a device which uses a light-emitting diode (or LED) and a phototransistor to provide electrical isolation between two circuits. The transistor or photovoltaic output type of optoisolator takes the form of a basic transistor switch output, in which the base of the transistor is coupled to an LED, with the LED light triggering the operation of the transistor.4N35FM Application Field
The 4N35FM optoisolator device, being a Phototransistor output type, is often used in voltage sensitive, or current sense IC interfaces. It has built-in photodiode protection, and can be used in industrial, aerospace and military applications. It has ratings of between 40 Vrms to 300 Vrms of photo-coupling isolation, a 0.3 A continuous collector current, and a 0.6 A pulse collector current. It also has a wide operating temperature range, and is suitable for operation from -40 to +100 degrees Celsius. As with most optoisolator devices, it is also in conformance with the industry standard UL 1577.Working Principle of 4N35FM
The 4N35FM device has a photodiode (or LED) component and a phototransistor collector component. When current passes through the photodiode, it produces a light signal which is received by the phototransistor collector. This causes the collector to switch "on" and activate the operation of the transistor. The lower current that passes through the device is known as the input current, or "forward current". When this current is interrupted, the transistor closes by the operation of the internal photodiode. Thus, the device has the capability to both operate and to switch off.Conclusion
