- Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
- Application Field Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in various kinds of electrical and electronic products. They are mainly used in evaluating, filter circuits, signal conditioning circuits, frequency compensator etc., with the functions of power storage and electric current stabilization, and they are also able to act as supporting components from traditional vacuum tube products to transistors, integrated circuits and other related products.
- Working Principle Aluminum electrolytic capacitor works by exploiting the so-called "double-layer capacitance" of the electrical double layer, formed by the interface between solid oxide electrolyte and aluminum electrode. The aluminum oxide film formed on the surface of the aluminum foil electrode, acts as a dielectric to store electrical energy. The insulation between the capacitor electrodes is maintained by the oxide layer, and it operates by stored electrical energy. The amount of stored energy increases with the increase of the capacitance value.
- Features Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized components, meaning that they can dissipate direct-current by themselves, and they require a certain polarity for proper operation. The main features of aluminum electrolytic capacitor are high capacitance, low equivalent series resistance, and long operating life. In addition to that, aluminum capacitors have excellent temperature and frequency characteristics, and they are available in a wide range of capacitance values and sizes. Furthermore, their physical structure is very rugged and reliable, and well suited for industrial applications.
- Advantages The main advantages of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is that they provide relatively high capacitance in a small size and small weight. Their small structure provides an efficiency and convenience in mounting and operation. Moreover, aluminum electrolytic capacitors have long life expectancy and good temperature stability, which ensures that they can operate over a wide temperature range.
- Disadvantages The main drawback of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is that they are polarized components and can not be used in circuits having reversing polarities. In addition, their capacitance value closely depends on the applied voltage, so they cannot be used in the circuits having variable voltage requirements. Furthermore, they are not very suitable for high frequencies or for operating in high temperatures, because they can suffer from high leakage current or capacitance drops.
