Working Principle

An aluminum capacitor is made up of an anode which is a very pure aluminum foil and a cathode which is a mixture of a manganese dioxide powder and a carbon powder. These two components are enclosed in a tubular body that is made of plastic, ceramic, epoxy, metal or paper wrap. The anode is typically etched with a pattern of large and fine undulations in order to increase the surface area over which the thin oxide layers can form when the capacitor is polarized during manufacture. This is important to make sure that the capacitance value of the device is within the expected range.

The electrolyte is usually an alcoholic solution or an oxide of manganese dioxide (MnO2). The electrolyte serves two purposes. Firstly it is the medium in which ion transport takes place from the grain boundaries to the oxide layer and secondly it acts to keep the surfaces of the two electrodes wetted and so insulated. It should be noted that the wetting action which keeps the two electrodes from electrically shorting out does depend on the concentration of the electrolyte. In fact these devices are almost completely unaffected by very high DC bias voltages, usually remaining within the rated capacitance and ESR rating.
